BH>B&G eggs are actually larger than a Hyacinth's. The Hyacinths eat a
BH>diet higher in protein and fat, basically more nuts. Both the lady with
BH>the Hyacinths and another friend that legally raises Palm Cockatoos
BH>(among others) order all over the country for special nuts such as
BH>Macadamias and others. The Hyacinths seem to really like Brazil nuts and
BH>Hazel nuts.
Bill Bennett, a man from Virginia who raises ONLY hyacinths (something
like 38 pairs), spoke at our bird club once. He insists that in order to
stay healthy, they need an incredibly high-fat diet. He orders Brazil
nuts by the TON, along with coconuts, and also palm nuts (not something
the average bird owner can get at the local market). He claims that
without the palm nuts, the birds' fertility rates go way down. (Granted,
Bill is wealthy, and can afford to buy tons of food at a time...). But
it was an eye-opener for me, because I *had* originally planned to save
up for one pair of Hyacinths. Nuts and coconuts cost a fortune up here.
I didn't realize that a typical affordable fruit-veggie diet such as my
conures prefer wouldn't be 'good enough' for a Hyacinth. I decided I'd
just enjoy OTHER people's hyacinths after that...
