I recently mentioned that I wrote to Russell Barkley about ADHD kids
receiving both more frequent and harsher discipline than their non-ADHD
peers. With his permission, here is the response:
Dear Mark:
Thank you for writing your rather lengthy email concerning the nature
and quality of discipline meted out to the ADHD child. This issue has
been raised before, but not as clearly as you have.
I took the liberty of reproducing your email and distributing it to all
of the clinicians at our center. It was my purpose to raise this at our
monthly staff meeting. Little did I know that this would be one of the
most boisterous meetings we have had.
It is the distinct impression of my staff that the ADHD child is more
frequently disciplined and receives a harsher discipline than the child
without ADHD. Please note that I said it was our impression. We have no
hard numbers or studies to back this up.
However, that should not be the case for very long. One of our interns
has been searching for a research topic for their doctoral dissertation
in educational psychology, and just fell in love with the idea. You may
expect her to be in touch with you in the near future.
Of course, you do realize that designing such a study will be only one
of several major hurdles she will have to overcome. I feel that your
issue is in good hands.
I hope that Josh is doing better. As you know several of my well known
colleagues have their children placed in special school settings. Your
idea of special placement may be just what he needs.
Please keep in touch and let me know how he progresses.
Very truly yours,
Russ

I do not think that I need to comment on this. Dr. Barkley has said it
all.
