In the Catholic ceremonies I was familiar
with, wine was fed to the adherents only
on rare occasions if at all. I recall
Methodists, oddly, doing the real thing,
with some northern Baptist congregation
I encountered in Washington going through
the motions with fake wine (my grandmother
did a fair amount of religion shopping and
sometimes took her daughter and me with
her - she ended up being Adventist but not
vegetarian).
As far as dilution goes, the wine has to be
full strength before it gets used in the
ritual (that doesn't say it actually always
was). I don't recall whether the watering is
an essential part of the procedure or just
incidental to the handwashing thing.

That looks downright nasty.
