Try to turn your echo on instead of type:alt+c   This should work.
All alt+c is doing is turning on an echo for you to see your words.
To turn on your echo, type:alt+O  then T  then alt+E   and enter.
Then escape back out.  now your echo is on and you can see what you are 
yping
 and to turn it off just alt+o and t then alt+e again and enter.
If your not using a BBS or some other system of loggin in to another persons
computer, then you need echo on to see your typing.  
If you can see your typing without chat mode, then forget all of the above
and just type to them without the chat mode and you can capture everything
that you and they type.
