RE: Copyright Laws

The use of copyrighted material is kind of tricky.
If you plan to make money ( even a penny ) on the piece, then you MUST
contact the Copyright holder (ASCAP, BMI, or Harry Fox Agency).
If the project is for your use only and you have bought a cassette or CD
with the music on it, then, as far as I know, you can do anything you like.
If you are planning on doing a lot of this type of work then you should
consider purchasing a music library. I know of one that is very good, and
reasonable for most people. NetWork Music Library comes with over one
hundred CD's crammed with good industrial type background music. You can
buy the entire collection ( around $1500 ) or pay on a per-use rate.
Video Image Productions (319-33VIDEO) has this library and you could ask
Eric who to contact about getting one.
Lastly, you could check to see if the music you want to use is actually
under current copyright, e.g. The Beatles have a large amount of material
that is currently under public domain, a lot of their other stuff was
bought by Michael Jackson. Generally though, music put out in the last
ten to fifteen years is copyrighted and ASCAP or BMI handle the rights.
