Grammatically you are correct. The various other usages that have
developed have been an effort to change the socialization of girls which
until very recently did not envision any roles for adult femaes other than
wife, mother, nurse, secretary or schoolteacher. Interestingly,
when you read books or articles from the 40's or 50's, where the subject of
the sentence is a person pursuing one of those professions, the pronoun is
always "she", despite the fact that grammatically "he"
would be correct.
