To use this in DOS he has to have a Postscript printer (these
generally cost $200-300 more than the same model without
Postscript), and install the font.

This is what you have installed. It will change if you change the
printer. The fonts are located IN the printer driver.
There is a way to move fonts from one printer driver to another.
Movign the font to the printer driver simply tells
the printer driver that the font is there, so then you need to
use WP or a utility to download the font to the printer.
If you don't have a printer driver with the font, you then use
the detailed font metrics to create the font in the printer
driver, that is, to tell the printer driver that the font is
there.
It's all very do-able, but it isn't easy, at least not the first
time you try. For postscript fonts there are generic printer
drivers that have the fonts installed; it's probably easier to
modify these drivers to work with your printer than to move the
fonts. This is why I said it's easier with postscript.
Anyhow, unless the person is willing to spend $20 for the printer
manual, and then a bunch of time reading it and doing this stuff,
it's not practical. Facelift for Bitstream does work reasonably
well, and is probably a preferred alternative. One of my
colleagues has facelift installed. She has a Laserjet IIp (which
has only courier and lineprinter as native fonts, I think). She
printed one of my documents, prepared on a 4MP using Palatino (a
basic Postscript font, but not normally available on a PCL
laserjet), and it printed just fine.
