Mike Bilow said to JERRY LAPHAM in the Fido OS2 Programming conference
on 02-23-1996:
MB> The developer toolkit for OS/2 1.3 cost
MB> something like $2600, if I remember right, and it did not include
MB> the operating system itself that was officially priced at around $800.
And, of course, we all know what a success OS/2 1.3 was in the market
place.
MB> Finally, measured as an investment, DevCon is trivial. For the
MB> $179 a year it costs me to subscribe to DevCon with DDK, taking into
MB> account the DAP discount, I can make that back merely by spending a
MB> couple of hours giving someone an opinion about OS/2 programming,
MB> let alone writing any code.
But you're thinking of yourself and others as professional
programmers. Right now, ISVs can use "lack of experienced OS/2
programmers" as an excuse for not entering the market. If IBM had a
complete compiler and tool kit good enough to produce decent
freeware/shareware apps and sold it for less than $100, it wouldn't be
long before there was plenty of them.
