subject: Cable to Transfer from 15

Hi Benjamin,

BC> purpose in the beginning of this was to
BC> find out just how to transfer data
BC> from one media to another, between two computers.

Oh. I thought you was looking for somewhere to buy a *cable* to do such
a transfer. I merely explained that there was no such beast as just a
cable, although there are several ways to do what you wanted. ;-)

 BC> RG>Neither do I. The C64 SERIAL port is
BC> RG> designed for SERIAL DATA to the
 BC> RG>disk drives and/or printer.
 BC>
BC> On the computers I have used the modem
BC> plugs into a serial port, thus the
                ^
Since a modem, *all* modems are serial devices, then I'm not surprised.

BC> ignorant beginner ben assumes that this
BC> somehow occurs on a c64 also as is

Like I tried to explain, a C64 is no different to any other computer.
So yes, you do need to plug a modem into A serial port. Tis not the
same serial port as the disk drives though.

BC> BC> 6pin end like the one on the serial
BC> BC> cable which would link a 1541 drive to
BC> BC> the c64. Where do you get these
 BC>
 BC> To which is retorted:
 BC>
 BC> RG>You don't.

I could have lied to you and sent you around to Dick Smiths or Jaycar.
I thought I was being much kinder by telling you straight out that such
a thing doesn't exist.

BC> RG>PS.. I think that computers should be
BC> RG> like cars.. no one is allowed
BC> RG>to drive a formula one racer until
BC> RG> that have grasped the fundimentals
BC> RG>and had sufficient experience at
 BC> RG> "normal" driving.. I don't think
BC> RG>people should be allowed to use "high
BC> RG> power" computers until they at
 BC> RG>least have a fundimental understanding
BC> RG> of how a "basic" computer such
BC> RG>as a C64 works... it sure would save a lot of people a lot of
 BC>
BC> Well I don't agree with you. To start

I didn't expect you to. ;-)

BC> engines, how engines work, how combustion
BC> works, how cars in general work?
BC> Of course they don't, others most of the
BC> people in this country would not
BC> have licenses to drive or USE cars and if
BC> they did know these BASIC

You're right of course. However, I do also think that people *should*
have some idea of how a car works before they are allowed to drive one.

I never said I was a realist.

BC> RG>I'm sorry to rave on as much as I
BC> RG> have, but it really is one of my pet
BC> RG>hates when people see computers as
BC> RG> something "magical", and especially
 BC> RG>when they see a C64 as being totally
BC> RG> different from other computers.
 BC>
BC> One on my pet hates is when people seem
BC> to making valid statements when
BC> their points are actually fallacious. I'm

Hehehe, I can see that we could have some very interesting discussions.
I make an artform out of this type of statement. :)

BC> not accept that beginners in electronics
BC> cannot start tinkering before they
BC> know everything, how would they learn
 BC> anything otherwise? I ask because I
BC> am ignorant, not because I am stupid.

You'll be pleased to know that I have never called you stupid. You
ignorant hoon.

BC> How cares if USERS are ignorant of their
BC> computers workings, their role is

I do. (well, you did ask) -)

BC> Sorry about the headaches. Thanks for all
BC> the knowledge, I do appreciate
BC> the advise, all of it and I am well aware
BC> of my novice status in relation
BC> to power users like yourself.:-)

Power user ?? ROFL ! I still haven't gone beyond the C128. I feel I
should discover the limits of THIS machine before I start worrying
about finding the limits of "high power" machines. (See, I practice
what I preach).

Cheers,
Rod.

PS. One of the easiest ways to xfer data between the C64 and a PC is
via two modems. One on each system. The amount of data that most people
need to transfer doesn't warrant going into anything more complex.
The *easiest* way of all is to try to obtain a 1571/81 disk drive, and
Big Blue Reader for the C=. Most C64ers don't have these drives
though, and it is generally not worth investing in one unless you have
a lot of xferring to do, or need it for other purposes.
