Hi, Stan;

SB> Ivy, I think the number of extra 5/8 or really 1/2 wavelength
SB> sections that you add is only limited by the strength of the material
SB> you are using. Yes, each would add about 3 dB of signal strength,
 SB> minus some small losses.

OK, that's what I thought. Thanks.

SB> Have you considered one continous raditor that is made up of odd
 SB> multiples of a 1/4 wave?

Theoretically that will work, however the even 1/4 waves will tend to
cancel out the gain unless you use phasing stubs every 1/2 or 5/8
wavelength with insulators between.

SB> I understand that when you
SB> keep them odd, you don't have any problem with matching and such.
SB> I'll build one today that's about 12 feet tall and check it with the
SB> analyzer and report back to you.

Which reminds me, I remember MANY years ago seeing plans for a coaxial
antenna made from coax, where the sections were about 1/2 or 5/8 wave
long. I do not remember how the phasing was done on these, but it seems
like it might make a good omni VHF gain antenna if placed inside a PVC
pipe. Do you have any details?

 SB> Isn't this FUN!!

I LOVE IT!!!

My next antenna project: a directional gain antenna for 162.400 MHz to
get the WX radio station from Milwaukee, (about 50 miles). I can usually
get it on the 6 dB Business band J-pole, but when the weather gets nasty,
it gets so noisy it can't be understood. (I do have corona discharge
"points" on top of the J-poles, (which have good earth grounds), in the
hopes that it will neutralize nearby charges in the air sufficently that
I don't take any direct hits.) Also, I ground the outside antennas, so I
need something nearer ground level, away from lightning danger, to get
the WX freq for my ARES activities.

Does anyone have an ARRL Antenna handbook they want to get rid of?
