Subject: L&J: Do we really want Dole?
Let me grant from the outset that I prefer Dole, marginally, to Clinton.
If so, some would counsel that I should vote for "the lesser of two
evils", rather than risk Clinton getting into office.
I could argue that Clinton will not win this election, on several
grounds, but - for purposes of discussion - let's assume that he
will, indeed, win.
Emboldened by this victory, what will he do? More "Anti-Terrorism"
control; more "health care" control; etc. He will either fail, as
he did with the Health Care debacle, or provide further evidence
that Big Government doesn't work.
Four years from now, a Small Government/Small Taxes (sg/st) candidate
will be in an excellent position to point to the Democrat record,
show the cost of their actions, and win the election.
Let's look at the alternative proposed by Dole supporters: socialism,
only cheaper. Dole has decades of experience bringing us bigger
government. A Dole presidency will lead to more of the same.
However, Dole will have been doing the same thing as Clinton on
the campaign trail - running on a "lg/lt" platform - and the
public, unwisely, identifies the GOP with lg/lt. After four years,
the Democrats will swoop in and say "We tried lg/lt. It didn't work.
Let's go back to a Democrat ( which won't work either, but will
be more caring and compassionate )"
Both Clinton and Dole will, based upon their established records,
deliver a larger government in four years than we have now. I do
not value larger government spending. So what do I do?
Vote for one of several Constitutionalists. Personally, I am
committed to the Libertarian Party, but you may have other choices.
Vote for the person whom you believe would, if elected, lead to
the best outcome.
A vote for Clinton or Dole is a vote for a bigger government;
for more taxes. If that is not what you want, don't waste your
vote on either.
"It is better to vote for what you want, and not get it, than to
vote for what you don't want, and get it." Eugene Deb said this
for years, and never sat in the President's chair in the Oval Office,
Yet, in the attempt to capture his votes, both parties moved so
far that I think of them as "Socialist Party A" and "Socialist
Party B". Most of his planks are now an accepted part of the
political scheme.
I hope that once again, the accepted role of government is small;
the accepted level of taxation is low. We will not get there if
we continue to vote for the opposite.
Besides - what if you win? What if a candidate wins who honestly
is committed to upholding the Constitution? For the first time
in decades, the federal government will shrink! Government offices
will close, and stay closed. The IRS will close its doors. You
will again be free to spend your income as you wish.
Is that not reason enough to vote Libertarian? What would it take?
What can anyone promise you ( without taking from someone else )
of more value than the right to keep and spend your own income,
to live your own life, in any peacable and honest manner?
