I've got a confession to make...   I accidentally swapped the power 
adaptors with another electrical appliance. The other one that I accidentally 
used for the modem had a slightly higher voltage. Now that I'm using the 
correct adaptor the modem still gets rather hot (it always has, depending on 
room temperature), but I can touch it with no problem.
I guess I'm lucky I found out about it in time, it might have burned out 
otherwise...
