subject: BIOS.

Hello Jim, it is a lovely day today.

JH> Thursday night, I finally saw a board with one of those VIA C3 800
JH> chips on it where I volunteer. It was a cute little board, smaller
JH> than Micro-ATX, and with only one PCI expansion slot.

You must have a different type. Most everything
JH> else is already on the board - video, sound, NIC, etc.

No NIC on mine. Looking at the plan in my pamphlet, I see Micro
        ATX form 24.4 x 19.0 cm.
JH> There are a few disadvantages to this little board - - it only has
JH> one IDE channel, and the CPU chip is soldered directly to the board.

Mine has the regular IDE connectors, the 0 and the 1.

JP> Can you explain this? In my BIOS for this VIA 800, I see under:
JP> VIA C3 Clock ratio this : Default
 JP> Current Host clock : 133 ( I can toggle it to 166 )

 JH> That 133 sounds right - - from VIA/Cyrix website, the C3 800 uses FSB
JH> of 133, so the CPU's locked clock multiplier would be 6 to get 800.

6 x 133 is 798, but let us not quible about the missing 2. ;-)
AOL system information at times says that it runs at 820, never
less than 802. Fine by me.

JH> Via email, you say that you have PC133 memory sticks, so I think this
JH> should be set to 133 as well.

They are both set at 133 now, thanks to you.

JH> Hee. Set the DRAM clock back at 133 and it should speed up a bit
JH> more. You might recheck what I said above at the VIA website. Per what
JH> I saw there, your host bus (FSB) should be at 133 for the VIA C3 800.

I will not argue with this as this is where they sprung to life.
They are now set at 133, both of them and stable they are.

JH> I think your chip's default value is 6, and should be left there.

When booting, it says ( 133 x 6 ). As I have it set at default
for lack of better information, I presume that it does run at
        that factor of 6.

JH> I can't say for sure about the VIA chips, but Celerons have a
"locked"
 JH> clock multiplier in them.

I would think that it is not locked as there are options to vary
the clock some. The least I play with this the better it is. I
could never agree with this overclocking stuff.

Thanks for the come back, I am sure that Jeff will not mind.
        You be good.
