| subject: | Clarification on Hudson vs. JAM vs. Squish |
Hello Minh.

Before those there was the MSG format where each message was
stored in a seperate file (1.msg, 2.msg, Etc.). It is still used
today by many but usually only for netmail storage.
The others each have good and bad points about them. I started
out with Hudson when I ran Remoteaccess years ago. But quickly found
the messagebase size limit of 16MB to be too much of a limitation.
Never got into Squish that much as I went to JAM instead. Still use
JAM to this day in fact.
ML> Is there a comparison article somewhere ?
The MSG messagebase stores each message area in a seperate directory
and each message in a seperate file. The MSG format was the original
Fidonet message format. A lot of work was needed to maintain the message
base and the way the files were stored wasted alot of HD space. The
messagebase was limited to 10000 message areas with an unlimited number
of messages (Based on the OS used).
The Hudson messagebase stores all messages in six files which are
MSGINFO.BBS {general information about the messagebase}
MSGHDR.BBS {headers for the individual messages}
MSGIDX.BBS {message index by number and area}
MSGTOIDX.BBS {message index by recepient's name}
MSGTXT.BBS {message text}
LASTREAD.BBS {user last read message numbers}
There are limitations as to maximum number of message areas which is 200
and maximum messagebase size which is 16 Mb or about 15000 messages. Which
means all message areas combined.
The JAM messagebase stores all areas in a single directory (By default)
and stores messages in each area in 4 files. Usually called:
.jdt
.jdx
.jhr
.jlr
JAM message bases are limited to 10000 areas and an unlimited number of
messages.
