Army's urban combat training rattles Pittsburgh residents
 
 
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Helicopters carrying special Army units
training for urban combat swooped low over the city early yesterday
morning while explosions of blank ammunition shook neighborhoods
below.
 
One of the many worried residents who were unaware the commotion
was only make-believe and called police to complain said the noise
was so loud it sent his wife into labor.
 
About 200 ground troops, helicopter crews and support teams drilled
from just after dark Monday until about 1 a.m., said Lt. Col. Kenneth
McGraw of the army's Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg,
N.C.
 
Army and public safety officials had gone door to door to alert people
in the affected areas a few hours before the maneuvers began,
McGraw said, but not everyone was informed.
 
``It's impractical to think that you're going to go to virtually every
place that helicopters will overfly,'' McGraw said.
 
He said the officials decided against announcing the war games
publicly for fear of attracting unmanageable crowds of onlookers. The
exercises will continue nightly through Saturday.
