 Something about holding the first line in memory, then
 scanning it at the same time as the second line.

 I've forgotten more than I realized since I last taught
 electronics/communications at the college 29 years ago.
 However, comparing the 3 systems wasn't the "meat" of
 subject - that wasn't required to understand the NTSC
 system selected by the FCC.

 But the nickname was a slam against NTSC, which is why
 the PAL system came to be known as "Peace At Last". 

 BTW, France has now banned the use of the term "e-mail"
 throughout the government.
