ANTI-PREEMPTION MEASURE FIZZLES OUT... Because of a lack of
support, on Monday, January 26, Assmblywoman Debra Ortiz asked
that her bill, AB 1107, not be brought up for a reconsideration
vote in the Assembly Appropriations Committee .  Last week the
committee voted down the proposal, which would have allowed local
governments to regulate firearm sales at gun shows and other
events.  Stay tuned, as this may not be the last we hear on this
issue in the '98 legislative session. 
  
IN THE ASSEMBLY...Still awaiting a  floor vote in the Assembly is
SB 1339 (Calderon), which seeks to ban so called "high capacity"
magazines.  Please contact Assembly Members and encourage them to
vote "NO" on SB 1339!  Assemblyman Knox has decided not to push
his bill, AB 532, which would limit handgun purchases to one in a
thirty day period, so that can be considered dead for this year.
Also, don't forget to ask  your lawmakers to oppose AB 23
(Perata), which would expand California's "Assault Weapons
Control Act" when it comes up for consideration.
