When you telnet into nfbnet from compuserve, try specifying an 8
bit data path and no escape character to keep binary files from
possibly triggering telnet into its command mode.
On my provider I type
telnet -8 -E nfbnet.org
and that is a -E a capital E.
z-modem usually works like a dream for me now.
