We've got Jenday babies on the way! I didn't PLAN to set Rio & Paco up
with a nest box until I had the chance to take their cage outside and
scrub it down thoroughly.
The weather didn't allow for the cleaning, and THEY had other ideas, and
no intention of waiting for a sunny day.
On April 17, I noticed that Rio looked odd. I picked her up and found
that her belly was swollen. Uh oh, she always feels/looks this way
before she lays the first egg in a clutch. Up went the box on to the
nasty cage, and on Sunday April 21, Rio laid the egg. She's now on 4
(maybe 5 by now, I haven't checked today). Two are definitely fertile,
the other two are too new to tell yet (but again, #3 may show by later
today). So by May 15 or so, we should have more jenday babies hatching
here!
The activity in mom & dad's cage has gotten to 3 year old Rico and Ivy
(who just turned one year old in March). I found them 'doing the wild
thing' a couple days ago. I have NO intention of letting them have a
nest for another year--not until Ivy is physically mature enough to
handle egg-laying.
Kirsche is disgusted by all this whoopie going on around her, and
would really prefer to come out and live with the HUMANS. I'd be glad to
move her cage into the living room, BUT...
We just got a second dog, another greyhound. "Snow" is a retired AKC
show dog who we adopted from a friend on the Internet. Our other
dog Tesla's separation anxiety has been low-level steady for several
months, and we decided to try adding a friend to see if she'd help. She
HAS! He's more normal than he's been in the whole first year we've had
him.
The only drawback to this new dog is that she's VERY interested in the
birds. We haven't settled the issue of "birds are off limits" yet, so
until we do, Kirsche "the green person" has to live in the BIRD room.
I'm STILL not sure where I'm going to put a brooder yet...
I need a bigger house!
