I am reminded of the comments of a German villager listening to the roar of
NATO tanks passing through town near the East German border: "That is the
sound of freedom".
Some sacrifices need to be endured to guarantee people's freedom. The
occasional low level pass of a fighter aircraft is one of them. Personally,
I find it a thrill, though I remember a fishing trip along the coast of North
Carolina where I almost had a stroke:
I had my head down in the ice chest digging around for a drink when a Marine
F-4 snuck up behind me and passed off our starboard side maybe 30' off the
deck and 100 feet to the side. "JESUS CHEE-RIST!" My father saw this fellow
coming and didn't say a word in warning. Then he just about laughed himself
off the boat. What a great guy. :)
