We have one family member here who has both high blood pressure and
diabetes.  She's convinced that it was the beta blockers that pushed things
in that direction,  for whatever that's worth...

Seems to me that it's still something worth keeping an eye on.  You
mentioned difficulties with your eyesight?  That's one symptom.
