I am new to sailing (been on plenty of boats in my life, but never a
sailboat). I am an inflatable boat enthusiast. I happened to stumble upon a
Sevylor product booklet that shows a sail kit mounted on one of their
inflatable boats. Have you ever seen one of those?
Here is what the booklet says about the product - please tell me what you
think:
"New for 1997, improved hardware and new kick-up rudder and tiller."
Sevylor SA Sail Kit
Universal Sail Kit will fit all Caravelle style boats, 3-person and larger
which Sevylor has produced over the last 30 years.
The design is a copy of the ancient Polynesian outrigger sail utilizing
an A-frame mast, 13' front spar and a loose footed 40 sq. foot Dacron sail.
Directional stability is supplied by an aerodynamically shaped side keel.
It can be raised and lowered and locked into position with an
ingenious lever device. It is the most efficient Sail Kit ever designed
for a small inexpensive inflatable.
The photograph shows the 13' high sail mounted on a boat 9'3" in length.
It looks like it might be a lot of fun, but appears a little top-heavy - like
a good strong gust would tip the whole thing over into the drink.
Does anyone happen to know of a mail order dealer in the United States that
carries the full range of Sevylor products such as the sail kit?
I have been unable to find a local dealer that carries any Sevylor
accessories, nor any dealers that are willing to special order these items.
Also, does anyone know what a light weight sail kit such as the one described
should cost?
P.S. What is a "kick-up" rudder?
