You said it right there ('which I would personally love to do'). Many of us
feel the same way. It's a cultural thing; the auto gives us freedom that we
simply cannot have if we're limited to train travel. Freedom to come & go as
we like and freedom to live where we wish. Yes, there's a price to be paid,
but it seems like Americans are willing to pay that price.
