RH> an 8 oz can of tomato sauce
DM> 8 oz = how many grams?
Others have already talked about ounces (and pounds).
But here comes the tricky part. We also use the term "fluid ounce" to
describe the volume of liquid equal to that of an ounce (mass) of
water. Rather like how 1 gram of water occupies 1 cc or 1 ml.
The British routinely use the term fluid ounce but Americans use the
word ounce to describe both mass or weight and the fluid ounce volume
which can be confusing.
8 ounces of meat weighs half a pound but 8 ounces of water is half a
pint and fills a cup.
In Canada tomato sauce is sold in 398 ml cans which is 13.458 fl
(fluid ounces) which weighs 14.53 ounces as tomato sauce is 8%
denser than water. That may sound like an odd amount but a standard
"one pound" can will contain 14-16 oz of product depending on its
density. So that "8 ounce can" described above actually delivers
7.265 ounces of tomato sauce in reality.
This recipe describes a 14 oz not 16 oz can which is a more honest
description of it.
