I think it comes from too much misuse of the "Loudness" control, which
is intended to compensate for tonal quality at low volumes (Fletcher-
Munson curve)not at loud volumes. They get used to it.

The mix position was probably in a lousy location, and the guy
didn't have a clue as to what it really sounded like in the
"listening" position of the audience (that's what counts).
Chances are though, you are right that he has some hearing
loss being around that environment long enough.
