PE> Yep, I've got a "RING" followed by "NO CARRIER"
here, 12 seconds
PE> after the ring. Followed soon after by a connect with V42bis
PE> at 9600. If you gather some stats, you might want to see if
PE> say forcing LAPM without compression helps any. BFN. Paul.

DM> Still having the occasional non-connect. And I have enable LAP-M
                      ^^^^^^^^^^

That's a far cry from 1 in 3 or whatever it was you were saying.

DM> only with no compression. I'm really at a loss where to go from
DM> here. I know it's not the modem, because it worked OK at another
DM> suburb, and a different PC brought home, with the same modem,
DM> also played havoc.

It could be a bad line, if it normally works, but occasionally
doesn't.

DM> I had thought it was the serial I/O cable, but that fixed the
DM> slow upload speeds but not the bad connects.

Did you get a multimeter and find out which wire was bust?
BFN. Paul.
