JE> Don't forget about the vertical and horizontal polarization

AM radio was vertically polarized from the early, early days
of broadcasting. The standard selected for TV was horizontal
polarization because it was discovered that noise was mostly
vertically polarized. Thus horizontal polarization leads to
less interference to the picture (which is an AM signal).

Many, many years later someone came up with the bright idea
that if most noise is vertical but some is horizontal, why
not try circular (or spiral as someone called it earlier)
polarization. Lo and behold! Even less interference to
 the signal.
