Paul didn't like "cheesy strings". He blanched at the idea of
using strings
on "Yesterday" until George Martin assured him he'd do something
"tasteful" -- like a string quartet.
I have no information about George Harrison's preferences or any discussions
between Harrison and Martin regarding the orchestral backup on
"Something".
I always thought it was a tasteful arrangement; I've never heard it without.
One has to realize that when the Beatles were fab, the few FM stereo
stations that existed were only playing stuff like Montovani and his Sappy
Strings for the oldsters, and that was the same stuff being piped into
elevators and supermarkets. So Paul and his (my) entire generation recoiled
from that stuff. Today, you're more likely to hear the Beatles (or newer
material) in those same venues.
