As you yay they use thinner tape,  for this reason many tape player
manufacturers warn not to use C-120 tapes in their equipment.
the thinner tapes are more liklely to have problems. like snapping
stretching or wrapping.

yeah, pretty much.

if you can slow the motor down you can record for longer on the tape,
but then you need a slow machine for playback, and also lose some sound
quality (especially at the high frequencies) not a problem for recording
voice (0.3-3.3 Khz) at most casettes will work to above 15Khz at full
speed.
