I am avid boater (power..sorry) and ham.  Raytheon is ideal choice for 
price.  If unit is to be topside, don't trust those claiming 
waterproof/water tight.  Get them wet and they'll show it later on.  
Especially if hosing under normal water pressure.  Now that channel 16 
and channel 9 can be used for hailing and distress, best to have 
scanning capabilities.  I have had Apelco, Standard, etc.  but found 
Raytheon best for buck.  Best of all, no FCC fee (once called a 
license).  Look for high/lo output, which equates to 20w/1w.  Don't go 
with unit that has hailing amplifier, and other bells and whistles.  
More that can go wrong.  About $250 used 375 new.  Sorry, mine is not 
for 
sale.
