Question: "Are you offended by the car in your garage?"

Answer: "If it was good enough for the guy I stole it from, it is good
enough for me."

Now, when YOU read that hypothetical answer, do you think the word "it"
refers to the GARAGE?  Or to the CAR?

By the way, if she had been using "it" to refer to the pledge, her
answer would have ended with "I'll fight in defense of IT."

If you don't like her, just say so.  Don't feel obligated to do violence
to the English language to try to justify your opinion.
