Hostas like shade and moistness - a slug's idea of paradise. The
quickest cure is handpicking them, but there are squeamish folks out
there. (You're not squeamish, are you, Terry?)
The next best is employing a couple of ducks, but in a suburban
setting, with a zillion duck-eaters (dogs) in the neighbourhood, and
the necessity for good fences, most people can't do that one. (Not
to mention that if you get any other ducks except Muscovys, you'll
break anti-noise regulations. :-))
So that leaves mainly sand, diatomecious earth, crushed eggshells,
and other gritty stuff to spread around the hostas. This is the
equivalent of a slug mine field, and it takes a brave slug to risk
it. But in REAL slug areas, ducks are by far your best bet. :-)
