 Aha!
 
 So my proliferating screw type theory was right!

 I've also come across the triangular screws --
 they seem to be universal in toys manufactured in
 China -- which these days I guess means all toys.
 Haven't seen them elsewhere yet. But so far I've
 had no problem getting a straight slotted driver
 to work with them. However, these were all screws
 set [not very tightly] in plastic, not metal.
