You can buy the stuff in bulk, but before you
do, consider getting some Chinese takeout and
tasting the packets you get. I have limited
experience with it (not getting Chinese takeout
much) but would not be beyond noting that the
stuff is sort of a betrayal of soy sauces, a
judas is kari-out, if you will. Ingredients
list: water, salt, hydrolyzed soy and corn
protein, caramel color, 0.1% sodium benzoate.
The hydrolyzed protein is the giveaway.

For those of us such as I used to be, the claim
by the dairy industry that cheese was "lactose
free" is uninstructive; it must have been based
on the perhaps true assay of "0% lactose." Well, as
Andrea's experience indicates, 0% and 0 are different
things. There are plenty of substances that cause
trouble in doses far smaller than 0.5% (the US
standard for many things to be called 0%).
Nowadays I don't mind so much, but the difference
between 0 and 0% used to be that between happiness
and sleepless nights.
