Those that I have seen advertised have not a display, but rather the
standard four indicator lights

The new modems have the requisite highspeed data pumps for 56K
operation, though results will depend on the purity of your line, the
number of analog-digital conversions between you and your service
prodiver and the availability of a digital circuit within your
exchange...

56K modems use your existing telephone line...
  
-> 56K service available at this time?

No, as there must be a digital link to the telephone network on the
originating side ...you won't see 56K connects on local boards nor
will you be able to connect to a friend with a 56K modem...
