Ok I read this in GUITAR magazine:
Apparently, Steve likes to tape whatever he's playing at all times, including
backstage warmups, sitting on the toilet, etc. So he found this awesome
tune he was playing from one of his really old tapes and couldn't remember
ever playing something that inspiring. He writes a fourteen minute opus
around that single idea, which ends up being the Fire Garden Suite. Then his
manager calls him with some news. She was playing the demo of FGS to her
boyfriend and had asked him if he knew who it was. The boyfriend says, "yeah,
that's the theme from Chess." The manager says, "uh no, that's Steve's new
song" but the boyfriend insists it's the theme to Chess, a musical. Steve
can't figure for so long how other people got ahold of his personal tapes
and ripped off his music... until one day a fan plays him a bootleg of Steve
backstage warming up when he was still in David Lee Roth's band. Apparently
Roth and the band had warmed up playing cover songs, and it just so happened
that they played the theme from Chess alot! hahahah so Steve had to work
out all this copyright and stuff because he didn't want to throw away the
14 minute opus that was to become the centerpiece of his next album!
