Hello to All Users of Adaptive Driving Equipment:
This message is to all of you drivers using adaptive driving
equipment, specifically those of you who have gone from driving normally to
the use of special equipment (ie. hand controls, power assists, etc.) I have
several questions, please answer those that coincide with your personal
experience or knowledge.
1) Is it required that it be reported that you now use adaptive
equipment to drive? Is it required to report the adaptive equipment if you
can still drive without said equipment, but choose not to do so because of
discomfort, pain, or fatigue in the legs when driving for extended periods?
These questions pertain to the Department of Motor Vehicles, or whatever is
the appropriate administrative agency in your state.
2) Same questions as above, but pertaining to your motor vehicle
insurance carrier? What was the effect, if any, on your motor vehicle
insurance rates, available coverages, policy renewal, etc.? Is the
specialized equipment 'insured' as part of the vehicle or are special riders
necessary to cover lifts and controls?
3) Regarding questions 1 and 2 above, assuming reporting is required,
what are the ramifications, if any, of failing to make these reports?
I'm specifically interested in the states of California and Arizona,
but I welcome, no in fact I encourage, responses from all 50 states and other
countries too. I haven't seen this addressed in any of the cyber-forums, so
if there is interest, I will compile the information and post it for all to
see. I would rather e-mail responses, especially those regarding CA and AZ,
to insure that I see/collect them all, but I will continue to monitor all the
echoes and newsgroups to which this is posted. Thanks, in advance, for your
help.
