Hi, Dave.
DJ> I just re-read the new titans from 71 to 100,the "titans hunt"
DJ> storyline.Frankly, I think that turning a once populer character
DJ> like jerico evil, then killing him off, probibilycost them some old
DJ> fans,as well as turning cyborg into an automation. They came VERY
DJ> close as well to killing aqualad off.
Also, they did succeed in killing the Golden Eagle.
Maybe it's 'cuz Jericho never struck me as an outstanding Titans
character, but I wasn't nearly as bothered by his corruption and
eventual death as other folks were. Don't get me wrong... it wasn't
as though I hated the character... but it wasn't like they were
killing off one of the original 5 Teen Titans... or even Raven,
Cyborg, Changeling and/or Starfire. From my POV I guess, Jericho
hadn't really been around all that long. I wasn't even all that
phased by the death of Golden Eagle or what they did to Cyborg (by
that point), if truth be known. The only character whose fate
concerned me was Aqualad... because the original Titans are still
ultimately my favorite.
DJ> It seems that nothings left of the new team titans in current dc
DJ> continuity.
A couple of the Team Titans are still kicking around here and
there. Terra II and Mirage were both members of the post-Zero Hour
Titans group (the one with Impulse, Supergirl & Green Lantern). The
others though, vanished after when Zero Hour eliminated the large
number of time-lost Team Titans groups who'd taken up residence in the
1990s.
DJ> If anyone kept up with the title after #101 to #130,I'd like to
DJ> hear what transpred,as well with the team titans after issue#10.
DJ> As well, was it ever resolved just who masquraded as Rita Farr in
DJ> issue#99?
I wish I could tell you. I lost interest in "the New Titans" by
#100... and even though I went back and bought all the issues I was
missing for it and "Team Titans", I still haven't found the time to
read them yet.
DJ> What did it for me,was seeing how insaine they were turning
DJ> Changling into, & the truely hidous creatures he was becoming,as
DJ> well as the truely AWFUL art of Bill Jaska!! Man, he was decent on
DJ> the x-men fill ins he did,but he ground the titans into the dirt!!
The only one of the 1980 NTT team (other than Robin, Kid Flash &
Wonder Girl) that I really liked was Raven... and when they killed her
off, my interest shifted to the original Titans almost exclusively
(that is, until Green Lantern, Damage, Impulse & Supergirl joined...
and that's when I began picking the book up again). As a result, I
really don't have much of an opinion on what the writers chose to do
with Changeling and Cyborg. They didn't kill Logan off... so I guess
the up-side to all this is, he could return in any future Titans book
(and with the developments in the character over the past 6 years or
so, he could return a more interesting character with a wider scope to
his shape-shifting powers. If I had one complaint about what they did
with Cyborg, it's that they took way too long to bring Cyborg's
unfortunate life to an end. I found it really annoying that first
they made him into little more than a personality-less automaton, a
state he remained in for way too long, IMO. Then, instead of fixing
him up (as I was expecting)... they kill him. I guess my question
is, "What was the point?".
DJ> Marv Wolfman as well, spent a good dozen years on the relationship
DJ> between Nightwing & Koriander, & that seems now to be just dust in
DJ> the wind.
This is one aspect of the NTT book that we will definitely
disagree on. I never liked the relationship that Dick Grayson and
Starfire had. Quite frankly, I thought it held Nightwing back from
getting any sort of ongoing solo book 'cuz having a girlfriend/fiancee
like Starfire isn't exactly conducive to the style of the bat-books
(and if they'd gotten married, the writers wouldn't have been able to
keep her out of it indefinitely). There was talk about bringing
Starfire back to earth and into the current Teen Titans group... but
with the upcoming changes to that title, I guess it's possible that's
all up in the air now.
DJ> Frankly, I was hooked on the title from issue 13 on,then got the
DJ> first 12 issues. By chance I had bought the first introductary
DJ> tale, but it did'nt grab me.I bought them from 13 to 59,then from
DJ> #1 vol 3, to 35, when I at last quit. I bought 7 issues of the
DJ> return of Perez with 50,a few now and then like 60-61,65, then
DJ> with 71, stuck it out for 30 more issues.
I bought NTT (Vol. 1) from #1 (and the DC Comics Presents #26
preview) all the way until #88. IMO, the best issues that team
(regardless of series) had IMO, was the first 50 issues of NTT Vol.
1 (by then it was called "Tales Of The Teen Titans"). After that, it
just didn't work for me anymore. I then bought from #50 of NTT (Vol.
2) until #101. When Arsenal's all-star team arrived (somewhere around
#118), I started picking the book up again and stuck with for about 6
or 7 months.
DJ> I think that Wolfman just couldnt wrap up his storylines, & like
DJ> Claremont, draged them to death. The brother blood one in
DJ> particuler.
You might be right. I guess it's worth noting that even Chris
Claremont "burned out" on the X-Men after a while. Personally, I just
found that a lot of the potential the 1980 Teen Titans team had...
especially the new members, disappeared over time. Sub-plots
involving them, particularly Cyborg, Changling, Raven & Starfire, came
to a head... and finished. Wolfman just didn't seem able to create
new and interesting storylines for these older characters... nor was
he able to populate the group with new and interesting characters.
Some newcomers like Kole, vanished before we even got a chance to know
her... and others just didn't bring anything to the book, IMO (Danny
Chase/Phantasm, Wildebeest and Pantha). Even returnees like Lilith
and Red Star didn't improve the book. I think "Titans Hunt" was an
attempt to generate interest in the book by celebrating the old team
(it was their 10th anniversary) and introducing a newer one with a
somewhat modified membership (an attempt to capture some of the magic
the 1980's team had). The Arsenal team was, IMO, a last-ditch effort
to keep the book afloat, but it didn't work either (ironically, at
that point, the Titans were more JLA-ish than any of the then-current
Justice Leagues...).
DJ> At best, I give the new titans to issue 50.
You may be right. Traditionally, the Titans have not been a
permanent fixture at DC. Even the original Titans book only lasted 43
issues before it was cancelled. In the mid-to-late '70s, the book was
revived... but only briefly (it was cancelled after #53). Then came
the New Teen Titans... who had a more impressive run than it's
predecessor (91 for Vol. 1 and 130 for Vol. 2)... but in the end, they
went out with a whimper too. Can the new "Titans" book stick around
for the long-haul? I doubt it. The problem with most team-books
these days (as I see it) is the temptation to tinker with it... and
(IMO) that can be "death" to a title (especially a team-book).
Talk to you later.
