And so it came to pass, on 03-08-96 16:28,
that Phil Roberts spake unto All :
PR> I've seen CD players for cars that can be installed with an RF
PR> modulator. This means they are able to transmit FM to an existing
PR> FM stereo radio.
PR> Are these generally installed inline between the vehicle antenna
PR> and the head unit, or do they just broadcast?
They typically feed a small RF-modulator box that installs in the antenna
lead. Most modulators can be set to one of two frequencies, usually two
"stations" apart and low on the band (89.5 and 89.9MHz, for example).
PR> I don't have any experience with these. Can anyone tell me if this
PR> is a worthwhile way to install a CD changer in the car? The idea
PR> is appealing, because it appears that the unit could be installed
PR> as a transportable between 2 or more vehicles.
Not really, since not only does the modulator install inline with the antenna
lead, but there are typically at least three wire connections to the car
(ground, and constant and switched power).
I did see a "demo" version of a Pioneer unit once, that was stuffed in a nice
padded case, had a big alligator clip on the end of the antenna lead, and a
cigarette-lighter plug on the power leads. It was great for salesdroids in
the shop I worked in (as an installer) at the time. I wouldn't generally
recommend this as a "transportable" concept though.
PR> I realize that the dynamic range of CD is much greater than FM, and
PR> that this isn't the best way to go. However, I'm satisfied with
PR> the FM sound in the vehicle. If the CD sound would equal the
PR> existing FM sound, I'd also be satisfied with that.
PR> Any opinions?
Obviously, these are not intended to be high-end CD systems, but a simple,
low-cost add-on for factory stereo systems to provide the ability to play
CDs, and little more. For what they are, they're great.
