(The VCR is an NEC N9063A from 1988 if that,s any help) First thing to do is check your tapes for any creasing along the top edge. A creased tape is by far the most common cause of these symptoms. If the tape is creased you probably need a new pinch roller. If the tape isn't creased, the pinch roller itself can cause these same symptoms (and if you leave it to get worse it WILL crease the tapes). IOW, this could be a chicken/egg scenario. If the tapes are fine, and its not the pinch roller, being an NEC my next guess would be loose tape guides. If the guides are fine then the only other possible cause I can think of would be a worn audio head. You would probably have no problem in replacing the pinch roller yourself ($10 for a 'generic' type - up to $40 for an original NEC replacement), but anything other than that is a job for the experts 'cos you'll need an alignment tape and tools.
