1237c41359b7 tech Hello Phil - PM> CHARLES ANGELICH wrote ----------WORKPLACE >> Here is a more recent survey: >> http://www.internetwk.com/breakingNews/showArticle.jhtml?arti >> http://www.internetwk.com/breakingNews/showArticle.jhtml?arti >> PM> Yeah, yet another activity for office workers that I suppose PM> wasn't around during the earlier survay. I think before music piracy there were people downloading large software apps (crackz) and other 'warez' at work. I know many who bragged about downloading the 'latest ISO' of Linux weren't doing it at home just based on their frequency/ease of downloading each new release. >> From what I've personally observed accusing these people of >> running their own businesses using their employer's computer >> would be giving them _way_ too much credit. PM> See my reply to Roy about the squirrelly guy who wanted to PM> sue. These people must have very distorted egos. I think people who literlly do _no_ work for days at a time, congregate at the xerox machine in plain view, and have a desk littered with vacation 'getaway' brochures, airline schedules, and auto rental brochures already have enough 'ego' to do just about anything and everything. PM> But I don't know how accurate your picture of the situation PM> is going to be, or is already, due to the series of PM> downsizings over the past few years. From what my friends and relatives have told me this was as bad or worse all of their working lives. I think this is how offices have always been. My most recent 'office job' was less than two years ago. The government was 'downsizing' to half the number of people then. Entire offices where 40 or more used to work would have a skeleton crew of maybe 5 people and they were moving the computers and chairs out of the empty cubicles. PM> A relative at a company that had a a major overhaul about a PM> year ago says his office is running smoothly with -less PM> than half- of the staff they had before, and apparently PM> performing the same job as before. Which says something.... I've seen this before and in companies where people cared to get the work completed this will work for awhile. When things start going wrong there is no 'cushion' for anyone to fall back on and people begin showing the wear and tear. Naturally this is the signal to replace them and then the constant hiring/firing creates more stress and the company goes in the dumper (surprise!). I would also point out that if I owned the company and discovered that half the number of people could get the job done properly I would immediately replace _every_ supervisor and management person in the company for not doing _their_ job to eliminate unnecessary payroll from my company. >> What I saw was passing joke emails around (much the way FAX >> was abused in years past), looking for cheap air-fares and >> auto rentals to plan their next vacation, and for some >> unfathomable reason typing up 'banners' to tape, pin, and >> hang all over the office _everywhere_. > > , , > o/ Charles.Angelich \o , > __o/ > / > USA, MI < \ __\__ ___ * ATP/16bit 2.31 * ...
