Apart from a couple of the very early 14k4s, such as the Series 3 NetComms,
the vast majority of modems available at that time were quite reliable WRT
connect speeds and cps rates. The main problems related to detection of
local service tones (and still does, it would seem).

Agreed, to a lot of people (especially those running multitaskers), V.34 is
only useful as far as wank value is concerned, but people like Poe are
saving bulk money in the long term, as the majority of their data calls are
at STD rates. I'll also agree that for purely local calls, it doesn't
really matter how long the transfer takes.

True, that would be money far better spent in your case. Assuming of
course that you have the money to start with...

KR> ps try win-95, it runs really well in 16 megs (:

Oh bullshit, Win95 is a buggy piece of garbage which STILL crashes with
great regularity, and won't even run half of my existing apps (it refuses
to accept the drivers installed by several of my winapps), which means
having to run a concurrent copy of Win311 just for those particular
programs. The only half good thing I can say about Win95 is that it's GUI
is starting to approach the functionality of that which OS/2 has had for
over 3 years now. Maybe MS will get it right with the next version, but I
sure won't be holding my breath in the mean time.

ROFL! Don't you wish...
