Hello Roy -

PM>> Yeah, yet another activity for office workers that I
PM>> suppose wasn't around during the earlier survay.

CA>> I think before music piracy there were people downloading
CA>> large software apps (crackz) and other 'warez' at work. I
CA>> know many who bragged about downloading the 'latest ISO'
CA>> of Linux weren't doing it at home just based on their
CA>> frequency/ease of downloading each new release.

RJT> Linux isn't something I'd put into the category of
RJT> "warez", as it's freely downloadable anyway...

I should've said " ... (and) I know many". I noticed my paragraph
could be interpreted that way but was tired and thought "who
would think I do not know Linux is not warez". Well Roy, you
answered that question for me. :-)

RJT> The reason people would tend to do that at work rather
RJT> than at home is because of the *size* of the download. Too
RJT> big to do conveniently over a standard dialup connection,
RJT> and a business is lots more likely to have a higher speed
RJT> connection available.

The way you have worded this shows a good deal of empathy
for those who have done this? It is no better than any other
form of misappropriation of the company equipment or the time
they pay their employees for.

RJT>

PM>> A relative at a company that had a a major overhaul about
PM>> a year ago says his office is running smoothly with -less
PM>> than half- of the staff they had before, and apparently
PM>> performing the same job as before. Which says something....

CA>> I've seen this before and in companies where people cared
CA>> to get the work completed this will work for awhile. When
CA>> things start going wrong there is no 'cushion' for anyone
CA>> to fall back on and people begin showing the wear and
CA>> tear. Naturally this is the signal to replace them and
CA>> then the constant hiring/firing creates more stress and
CA>> the company goes in the dumper (surprise!).

RJT> That's what you get when it's the bean counters at the top
RJT> who run things...

More like what you get with incompetent management. An owner is
technically 'a bean counter'.

CA>> I would also point out that if I owned the company and
CA>> discovered that half the number of people could get the
CA>> job done properly I would immediately replace _every_
CA>> supervisor and management person in the company for not
CA>> doing _their_ job to eliminate unnecessary payroll from my
CA>> company.

RJT> Good point, there.

Seems to elude most college grad business management types - of
course they tend to spend most of their time in 'meetings'
which would explain their lack of clarity on this.
