Roy, at 20:23 on Nov 24 1995, you wrote to Bill Grimsley... RM> Get a 14400 Sweatsock!. BG> Why? I've already had 3 of them - RM> all 14400s?? Yep, they most assuredly were, Ollie. one each US internal and US external, as well as (dunno what came over me) an Austel external, which the redoubtable David Drummond actually bought from me when I upgraded to V.34. Although I've only had successive bad connects no more than half a dozen times over all, I still can't see it being "occasional bad lines" myself. As Rod quite correctly suggests, the fact that it NEVER occurs when calling any other modem is pretty graphic evidence that the Spirit code is basically crap. RM> Maybe you need to move north. Only if I lived in a the other hemisphere. Ergo, south will do just fine, thanks all the same. As Lyn and I get older, we appear not to tolerate the excessive heat and humidity anywhere near as well as we used to. The 2400 baud modem built into his bubby Dauphin palmtop RM> works just fine, thank you... Seems to be a common problem with some internet providers, regardless of the theoretical top speeds of their modems. Very evident when testing modems at CHH too. A pity, as internet is exactly the place you need the ability to DL as quickly as possible (time-charged connects).
