ISS On-Orbit Status 3/22/03

Part 1 of 2

All ISS systems continue to function nominally, except as noted
previously or below. Space Day 119 for Expedition 6 (since launch on
STS-113 on 11/23/02).

A Saturday rest day, with a reduced list of routine tasks for the
crew.

After breakfast at 1:40am EST, FE-1 Nikolai Budarin performed his
daily checkup of the BIO-5 "Rasteniya-2/Lada-2" zero-G plant growth
experiment.

Next, Budarin terminated the regeneration cycle for adsorbent bed #2
of the BMP micropurification unit, switching it back to Purify mode.
Both filter beds are now in this mode again.

The station residents completed the weekly 3-hr house cleaning,
floating through their celestial home with vacuum cleaner, wet wipes
and disinfectants.

Later, Nikolai conducted the periodic inspection of the BRPK
air/condensate separator of the SRVK water processing system. He also
conducted the regular inspection of the BRPK air/condensate separator
of the SRVK water processing system.

FE-2/SO Don Pettit prepared the IMS (inventory management system)
auto import/export update files, and Budarin performed the daily
routine maintenance of the SOZh life support system in the Service
Module.

All crewmembers performed their regular daily physical exercise
regimen (2.5 hrs.) on RED resistive exerciser, TVIS treadmill, and
VELO ergometer with load trainer.

The work-around plan for the failed CEVIS (cycle ergometer with
vibration isolation) control panel was uplinked yesterday, and the
crew implemented it today successfully, from the "job jar" task
list. [The new procedure controls CEVIS workload with the use of an
external "Xantrex" power supply connected to a UOP (utility outlet
panel) and two scopemeters (combined voltmeter and ammeter). The
tasks involved preparing appropriate jumper cables and making the
connections between the scopemeters, power supply panel, and CEVIS
control panel. Both scopemeters are necessary for indicating cycle
speed and workload (in Watts) after their calibration against voltage
use and current.]

Science Update (Expedition Six -- 16th):

The crew received words of appreciation for their dedication to
completing payloads activities this week even while being occupied
with the ITCS MTL (internal thermal control system/moderate
temperature loop) repair. Ground specialists continue to be "amazed"
by the crew's earth observations imagery. During the past week
another session of PuFF was completed as well as an EVARM badge read.
Also, persistent MSG (microgravity science glovebox) troubleshooting
has brought the payload community closer to having MSG ready for
science operations next week.

Extra-Vehicular Activity Radiation Monitors (EVARM): The EVARM team
very much appreciated the weekly badge readings.

GASMAP/Pulmonary Function in Flight (PuFF): Thanks to good Ku-band
coverage, the PuFF team was able to see all of Don's and Nikolai's
sessions. Special thanks went to Don for checking a computer drive
for important data files which had run into a snag. Next PuFF session
will be in approximately two weeks and will serve double duty as a
pre-EVA session

Renal (Kidney) Stone Experiment: Completed for Increment 6. Bowersox
and Pettit continue taking their stone-prevention (or placebo) pills.
Final session is planned for in Week 20.

Human Research Facility/Workstation (HRF WS): Continuing.

Foot/Ground Reaction Forces During Space Flight (FOOT): The Foot
experiment was postponed, and investigators are planning to make up
the session next week.

Pore Formation and Mobility Investigation (PFMI): On hold until MSG
(Microgravity Science Glovebox) is operational.

Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS): SAMS is nominal and
collecting data again after the load shed event on 3/19.

Microgravity Acceleration Measurement System (MAMS): MAMS is nominal
and collecting data again after the load shed event on 3/19.

Protein Crystal Growth-Single Locker Thermal Enclosure System
(PCG-STES): Temperatures are nominal. Crystals are still growing.

Investigating the Structure of Paramagnetic Aggregates from Colloidal
Emulsions (InSPACE): On hold until MSG is operational.
