They call it the "Family Radio Service", power is half a watt and I beleive 
there are 15 channels authorized for use.
The high frequency, coupled with the low power handheld units will severely 
restrict their range. Very flat terrain excluded, the range most likely is 
going to be less than a mile, in areas with interference, computer noise or 
catv leakage, it will be even less.
