JF> Actually, I thought that sound was a bit weak, no offense. :-) The
JF> thing is, it sounds like Duke's gun is too light, and isn't the
JF> maker-of-death you'd think it'd be. It does make a great door sound
JF> though!
Oh well. Worked here. ;-)
JF> You ought to do more personal sound collecting. I'm sure there's a
JF> lot of potential sounds to grab out there. For example, if you're
JF> ever trying to get the sound of a TIE Fighter, try listening to a
JF> passing school bus.
Try banging on a long aluminum stadium bench and you'll get part of what
went into the blasters in Star Wars, or at least something very similar.
Believe me, as time permits, I try to collect sounds outside of the CDs.
Time rarely permits, though, and the CDs have done their job pretty well
for most things they've been called upon to handle.
LJ> ...including a Kurzweil K2500RS, which will make its presence known in
LJ> everything from Shadow Warrior onward.
JF> Does the Kurzweil (I have one of their digital pianos, by the way)
JF> mean that Shadow Warrior's music will be in MOD format, or something
JF> similar? Or will it just mean better MIDI?
Neither. CD Audio, a.k.a. Red Book, is the current plan for the
registered version. Almost every instrument in my arsenal will go into it,
from the mighty K2500RS to my ancient Yamaha PSR-300.
JF> Is it true that the DB50XG can do Jimi Hendrix music well?
With significant XG tweaks, probably. Yamaha's raw GM guitars sound good,
but are significantly lower in volume than some other cards.
JF> Hmm... well, nice to see you're keeping things in line. But
JF> still... any of the sound effects you've done strike you as being
JF> superb?
Well, I definitely like a few that I've done, but modesty prohibits me from
saying they're superb. As for which ones, you'll have to wait until the
game is out along with everyone else.
LJ> ...SOS system still uses raw PCM data instead of WAVs or VOCs.
JF> Thought that it might be the engine.
JF> Pulse-code modulation... is there anything particularly special
JF> about that?
Nope. It's just raw sound data. WAV files are nothing but PCM data with a
header and other comment fields tacked on. HMI simply uses WAVs with all
of the headers and comments stripped. Don't ask me why.
LJ> Since I've received clearance here, his name is John Galt. If you've
seen
LJ> Forrest Gump or JFK, you've heard him: he did LBJ's voice in both
movies.
JF> How about that! I just hope that he didn't overdo (or "underdo") Lo
JF> Wang's accent.
Better if he overdid it. ;-)
LJ> Can't get that specific in my comments at this time.
JF> Why not?
Because the game is still in development. Patience is a virtue - all will
be revealed when the shareware version is out. It'll be released when it's
ready.
