BA> BK>>>> What is the farmer's portion of the sale price? Double the BA> BK>>>> workers wages and you won't double that portion. So, if the BA> BK>>>> farmer gets 10%, you won't pay more than 10% more for the BA> BK>>>> food if the farm price doubles. BA> BA>>> The farmer's share of a $2 loaf of bread is about three BA> BA>>> cents. BA> BK>> Which doesn't really surprise me. A decent living for farm BA> BK>> workers would mean a small increase in food costs. BA> JB> Or the farmers could start their own bread manufacturing and BA> JB> retail distribution channel and then retain any profits from BA> JB> the efficiencies they can drive out. BA>Actually they wouldn't necessarily have to set up the retail BA>distribution channel. A couple of years ago I noted that there was BA>an empty factory (since demolished) across the street from a large BA>grain elevator in Red Oak, Iowa. I suggested that would be a great BA>place for a commercial grain mill and bakery, and that said bakery BA>could contract with Hy-Vee and Fareway (both are Midwest supermarket BA>chains serving this area) for distribution. BA>I think this is still a viable project, even though the building is BA>gone there's still BA>a couple of acres of commercial property there. BA>One hindrance - that was discussed in POLITICS many years ago - is BA>the fact that the smell of baking bread is considered by some to be BA>air pollution. I thought that was ridiculous, but it was pointed out BA>by an individual who worked in the (Illinois) state government at the BA>time that the substances released into the atmosphere from commercial BA>bakeries were in fact pollutants. BA>I suppose that some would also consider any dust emitted from a grain BA>mill during the production of flour would also be pollution. Agreed. I was pointing out one possibility. To your point, there are so many selfish self-righteous people in this country that exude the not in my backyard attitude. It is truly unfortunate to see how selfish the liberal agenda is, when enacted. I personally love the smell of a bakery. There's one here in Columbus that you can smell from the freeway. I used to love driving by it in the morning on my way to work. It was a heavenly smell.
