Hello Joe -

CA>> I think people who literlly do _no_ work for days at a
CA>> time, congregate at the xerox machine in plain view, and
CA>> have a desk littered with vacation 'getaway' brochures,
CA>> airline schedules, and auto rental brochures already have
CA>> enough 'ego' to do just about anything and everything.

JN> You failed to include operating "pools". (g) Football
JN> pools, baseball pools, soccer pools, basketball pools,
JN> probably horserace pools, baby sex/birthdate pools, and
JN> poker games based on paycheck numbers, among other things.

I could write a book about that. I've explained to my sons that
being good at your work means next to nothing but being the guy
who manages the 'pool' or the guy who makes the coffee each
morning is likely to keep you from ever being laid off or fired
even if you are a putz. I speak from experience. I wanted to
lay off the guy who made the coffee each morning and the vice
president wouldn't let me - he liked good coffee.

JN> The following appeared in my local birdcage liner Monday.

JN> $6 Million Software Scam

JN> A former Microsoft employee last week pleaded guilty to
JN> falsely ordering software meant for internal use and
JN> selling it for personal profit, the 3rd such incident since
JN> December. Kori Robin Brown, 31, a former administrative
JN> assistant at the company's Xbox video console and games
JN> division, ordered more than $6 million worth of Microsoft's
JN> SQL Server and sold it for personal gain between 1998 and
JN> 2000, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. Brown faces up to 5
JN> years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 for mail
JN> fraud when she is sentenced October 3.

I saw that in "Google News". :-)

$3 million per year plus her salary. This is a woman with
NEEDS! as Donald Trump would've said.

The followup to this would be educational. Generally white
collar crime gets a slap on the wrist. The judge and his
friends are all doing it and they have a great deal of empathy
that anyone ever gets caught.

I think there are a great many Microsoft employees (and
volunteer beta testers) who transfer and/or sell software
illegally. Some of the FIDO users are the beneficiaries of that
carelessness on the part of Microsoft but not noticing $6
million being misappropriated should've gotten a few managers
fired if it was my call.
