Hello Wayne -

WC>> that however has changed with the severe injuries that
WC>> left me crippled. Gradually my stamina failed on me over
WC>> the last 6 years.

CA>> In the movies the more pain the more the guy can tolerate.
CA>> Real life is less glamorous and we all eventually succumb
CA>> to the pain and fear of same.

WC> Yeah, "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger", what a
WC> bunch of bull.

My favorite one is "When the going gets tough, the tough get
going". Ya, right, they run away and live to tell the story any
way they want to. The survivors write the history books, the
heros are all dead.

CA>> I get the impression you still don't think "toughing it
CA>> out" is a bad idea.

WC> Nope, had to learn to micromanage my time. Everything I do
WC> during the day means something I must give up doing or I
WC> could not walk the dog. Dog hasn't had a bath in three
WC> months and I need to schedule that.

One day I should tell you about trying to wash the cat here
recently. Funny story.

WC> I mean how many people lay motionless in bed for hours
WC> thirsty or hungry with food in the fridge because the pain
WC> of moving to get food or drink just isn't worth the cost?

Well actually one more than you might think. My bed and my
computer are upstairs and the frig is downstairs just to give
you an idea.

WC> Recently as 1995 I had a broken ankle, called it my
WC> "walking break." Hurt like hell started to mend a bit when
WC> the girlfriend brought home a "Fender" amplifier. I carried
WC> the amp upstairs rebreaking the ankle, heard and _felt_ it
WC> snap on the third step from the top and steeled myself
WC> taking the next three steps, hey it was either that or go
WC> down the stair with the amp landing on me. Ankle turned
WC> black but circulation finally came back. Never thought
WC> about going to the hospital and that's the last macho
WC> gesture I've pulled. Finally healed correctly, I used to be
WC> TOUGH, no more.

That particular type of injury can develop into "Charcot's
ankle" and they would amputate your foot to save your life. You
made a wrong decision and survived the mistake.

WC> Thought I was bad at 6 days a week 11 hours a day, you've
WC> got me beat. Hard physical work and I recall some days
WC> sitting at the front of the plant at the end of the day my
WC> eyes closed and ears ringing for a few before driving the
WC> motorcycle home. 7 years at that place.

I had shooting pain that seemed to travel within my bones that
would run up and down my body from lack of sleep and have to
get in the car and go back to work. I had six children and a
non-working stay at home wife to feed.

CA>> This was about 20 years ago (or more) not sure they even
CA>> had beta-blockers back then?

WC> that might have been right around the time or slightly
WC> before I recall them being available.

Could be.

CA>> btw: My brother insisted I let him poke my finger a few
CA>> days ago. He is a diabetic after his heart surgery. The
CA>> medication for thinning the blood seems to always push
CA>> people into diabetes? Anyhow I had just finished a can of
CA>> Cola (no breakfast) and it came up 115. He said it can go
CA>> to 140 and still be OK.

WC> I had someone insist I do one of those things, think mine
WC> came back 117. They knew I drink too much and were
WC> concerned. Diabetes does not run in the family though.

A few diabetics on both maternal and paternal sides of the
family but I was only really overweight for 3 years of my life
and that was 5 or more years ago. Seems to help to not be
overweight.

CA>>> Seems a bit insane to me now that I did that but the

WC>> Ah the good old days when young and thought ourselves
WC>> indestructable...

CA>> Well in my mid 30's, yes.

WC> Same here, thought nothing could ever bring me down, WRONG.

It took quite a bit to do me in but no, I am not indestructible.

CA>>> We each deserve the same care and consideration we would
CA>>> show to our pets, our friends, and our family.

WC> Spanky was looking old and on the worst night was screaming
WC> when he walked, believe me you do NOT want to hear a Pit
WC> Bull scream :-( He's doing OK now, climbs up on the bed
WC> again, climbs the steps to visit upstairs neighbor, ect.
WC> I'm onto the signs he's in pain, tail droops on walks,
WC> flinches when I pet him on the backside, general
WC> inactivity, ect. When the medication fails to relieve all
WC> these I'll do the deed.

Sister just put her 20 year old tomcat to sleep. They found him
paralyzed on the kitchen floor. Apprently he had a stroke and
the vet wasn't sure at his age he would ever recover from it.
I don't recall the 'formula' for cats but I think he would be
something like 100 in human years. She took him to the vet
regularly and loves to put people and animals on 'diets' whether
they like it or not.

WC>> Last time I saw a doctor was in 1995.

CA>> I can't recall my last doctor visit. I took my children to
CA>> see the doctor and I get confused about whose appointment
CA>> was whose. One doctor even asked when I was going to make
CA>> an appointment for myself. I didn't realize that I looked
CA>> _that_ bad but I guess I did to him.

WC> I'd love to sit in on my own autopsy and hear what a doctor
WC> had to say about my spinal injuries. I don't look so good
WC> myself.

I avoid mirrors if that makes you feel any better. :-)

CA>>> It was a mistake to treat myself with such disregard. I
CA>>> would've never treated another living soul that badly.

WC>> I agree especially given the nature of the illness you
WC>> recount. I've had some angina but taken steps to limit
WC>> physical and psychological stress as well as attuned
WC>> myself to my respiration rate. No attacks in a year though
WC>> I may have aborted one last week by feeling what felt like
WC>> first onset took a bunch of short rapid breaths. Back when
WC>> I was having them regular it was a hell of a way to wake
WC>> up!

CA>> The lucky ones don't wake up. ;-)

WC> Actually when the angina went away I was dissappoinnted,

Understood.

CA>>> If you can detail just what is happening to you and when
CA>>> (after a 'clean' boot with the machine turned off/on or
CA>>> 'other' etc.) something may click here.

WC>> It's some kind of weird problem where the operating system
WC>> is not found on boot. I've seen error messages "No

WC>

CA>> This sounds like a bad connector or ribbon cable but I
CA>> don't

WC> The ribbon cable is where I'm going next,

--8<--cut

CA>> The page will help with memory/intermittent hangups in W31
CA>> but your problem sounds like a hardware problem to me.

WC> Yeah, your input is much appreciated. I'll go over all the
WC> options you mentioned in the next 10 days max and let you
WC> know. I was thinking since the landlady lives on the water
WC> corrosion on the IDE connectors? Sorry your health is so
WC> bad, being so messed up myself I would not wish either of
WC> our conditions on my worst enemy. Actually given their
WC> natures my three enemies of years gone by have likely
WC> managed to either have someone off them or gotten
WC> themselves killed in some other way.

I used to look forward to bumping into some of my old enemies,
now I'm hoping they are long gone or in worse shape than I am.
;-)
